Soldier's Angels, Dan Forant and Keystone Soldiers unite in the Freedom Ride across the United States to symbolize bringing America together coast-to-coast to Support Our Troops On March 1, 2004.

Mr. Forant will have a laptop with video and still picture capability that will transmit his progress to New York City daily. America will be able to watch his progress by visiting this site.

We ask all Americans to rally their communities & please pledge 1-penny for every 3 miles of the journey - approx. $20.00 for the entire trip. Or contribute whatever you'd like. ALL proceeds go directly to benefit our troops.

Soldiers Angels was formed in July of 2003 by Patti Patton-Bader, Mother of SPC Brandon Varn stationed in Iraq. Soldier's Angels mission is to provide aid and comfort to any armed forces fighting for freedom and their families. Soldier's Angels have to date sent over 2,000 packages to Soldiers deployed, helped the wounded at 3 major military hospitals and aided many families.

Cyclists everywhere along the route are encouraged to join us in the ride, for as long as you like. Be a part of history in the making.

The route begins in Albany N.Y. on March 1, 2004 and works it's way to Ground Zero in NYC. From there Dan will be heading through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana before connecting with historic Route 66 in Illinois.

The full route will be published in the very near future so keep us bookmarked in your favorites so you can follow us from sea to shining sea.

We will also have a direct link through PayPal for your donations posted here. We hope you will join Keystone Soldiers in showing your support for our troops. No donation is too small and every penny goes to care packages and assistance for our soldiers and their families.

The Record

Support our troops.
It's a phrase I've heard from both sides of the political aisle. Some say it, and what they mean is, "Stop criticizing the war and get behind this cause." Others say it and mean, "This war is a bad idea and we need to bring these soldiers home."

Both sides argue they are supporting our troops, and I wouldn't dare tell them they are wrong. But I spoke to a man the other day who has found another way to support our troops. He's planning to hop on a bicycle and ride clear across the country.
His name is Daniel Forant, and at this very moment his 18-year-old son is somewhere west of Baghdad. Daniel Forant III is a local boy, born and raised in Cohoes - an Army infantryman who is a long way from home.
Like a lot of men and women in uniform, he would feel a million miles away if not for the letters and packages that arrive from the Capital District. That's where his dad comes in.
Last August, Daniel Sr. wanted to show his support for his son, so he set up a little Web site.
It had pictures and postings he could share with his friends and relatives. Pretty soon people started sharing the site, and before long, Dan had other parents asking if they could include their son or daughter on the site. Dan said yes, and not long after he changed the name of the Web site to www.supportourtroopsiniraq.com.
"We were truly amazed at how this grew," Dan said. "It started out being just about my son, but now there are over 100 servicemen and women being honored."
And it didn't stop there. When Dan heard that the troops in Iraq needed little "reminders" from home, he quickly put together a donation campaign. Before long he had more than 5,000 pounds of goods. "Personal hygiene items are the most popular," he told me. With all that sand blowing in the wind, it's all the troops can do to keep their eyes and ears clean.
Dan has received help from all over the country. There's the eighth grade class in Pontdulac, Wisconsin, which filled 22 boxes with board games and books. And let's not forget the workers at Louisville Power and Electric, who wrote 600 Christmas cards and letters for the soldiers over the holidays. And now the bike ride.
Dan Forant has this crazy idea that he can ride a bicycle from Albany to Hollywood, in an effort to raise money for our troops. If he can get people to donate just one penny for every three miles he peddles, that works out to roughly 20 bucks per pledge. His goal is to raise $50,000. My question to him: Can a 39-year-old financial marketer who only jogs three days a week get on a bike and ride more than 2,000 miles? He thinks so.
Dan will start this difficult personal journey March 1. If he can pound out 60 to 70 miles per day, he'll reach Hollywood in six weeks. What about work? Dan says he'll bring along his laptop computer and plug in where he can.
Whenever I see people doing things like this, I wonder if it's all just a publicity stunt. While Dan would love publicity, he says it's not about that. It's about one man who's proud of his son and wants to show it by making his own sacrifice.
"Imagine if we raise a lot of money and we are able to go to a family that has lost a child over there and hand them a check for $5,000. We could tell them this is from people who have not forgotten your loss."
It's thoughts like that that will drive him. One mile, one penny at a time.

John Gray's column appears every Wednesday.

F.B.I. Director Calls Attack Quite Likely: "From tomorrow's NYT :
The F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III, said on Wednesday that terrorists would "quite probably" strike the United States again and that Al Qaeda remained a major threat despite the lowering of the nation's threat status last week.
"Al Qaeda would very much relish another high-profile attack within the United States in which numerous U.S. citizens would be killed," Mr. Mueller told reporters at a luncheon meeting sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor. "We have disrupted their capability, but there are still persons out there who have that capability."

No Chemical Agent in Iraq Mortar Shells: "[AP]
Tests by Danish and American experts indicate there is no chemical warfare agent in mortar shells unearthed in southern Iraq, but conclusive word will only come from a lab in Idaho. Earlier examinations had indicated a blister agent was in the shells, which apparently date to the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. The U.S.-led Iraq Survey Group conducted tests on five of 36 shells found Friday and all came up negative, the Danish army said Wednesday in a statement from Copenhagen. Those results contradicted Danish and British field tests that were positive for a blister agent. "Based on the tests, the experts conclude that none of the shells contain chemical warfare agents," the Danish army statement said, adding that more studies are needed for final confirmation.

Powell: No Smoking Gun Showing Terrorist Ties: "The song remains the same. From NewsMax :
Secretary of State Colin Powell acknowledged Thursday that he had seen no "smoking gun, concrete evidence" of ties between Saddam Hussein and the al-Qaida terror network, but insisted that Iraq had had dangerous weapons and needed to be disarmed by force.
At a State Department news conference, Powell disagreed with a private think tank report that maintained Iraq had not been an imminent threat to the United States. And the secretary defended the case he had made last February before the United Nations for a U.S.-led war to force Saddam from power.
"My presentation ... made it clear that we had seen some links and connections to terrorist organizations over time," Powell said. "I have not seen smoking gun, concrete evidence about the connection, but I think the possibility of such connections did exist and it was prudent to consider them at the time that we did."
Here's the link to the full text of the secretary's remarks at the Department of State.

On the right frequency

01/05/04

By RHODA A. PICKETT

Ham radios can save lives.

Clyde McAfee said he was reminded of that last week when he received a Christmas card from Eric Lind of North Carolina. Scribbled almost the length of the card was a personal note that gave quick details about the morning of April 21, 2001.

From Our Advertiser

"Clyde, you don't actually know me, but I'm the skipper of the Lansa, a Bristol 29.9-foot sailboat," Lind's note began. "On 01 you heard my transmissions on the marine SSB and notified the Coast Guard."

At the time, McAfee was sitting at his ham radio on U.S. 45 in Eight Mile near the northern end of the Prichard city limits and heard the distress call of a sailboat captain the U.S. Coast Guard said was 75 nautical miles northwest of Cuba.

Lind said he had lost McAfee's contact information but recently found it "reorganizing some files."

"I wanted to thank you for your concern," Lind wrote. "I always wondered how the Coast Guard became aware. At the time I didn't consider it an emergency, however, the water at one point had gotten to my knees below in the salon. Looking back on it you were right to notify them."

To the untrained eye, the building behind McAfee's house looks like many hobby shops. Even the nearby 100-foot antenna may not spark curiosity.

But step inside and you soon discover that the high frequency radio along with a Morse code transmitter and a citizen's band radio transform the little shack in Eight Mile into a conduit to the world. McAfee, 61, has the call letters KG4BVR. The Federal Communications Commission issues the call letters to each amateur radio operator.

Coast Guard Petty officer Jonathan McCool, a public affairs officer for the Coast Guard in New Orleans, confirmed that on April 21, 2001, at 8:37 a.m. EST, a call went to Coast Guard officials in Miami, who received a relayed message from McAfee saying that Lind was taking on water after losing a seal. McAfee also told Coast Guard officials that Lind said he had a pump and a raft.

The Coast Guard dispatched a C-130 cargo airplane to find the Lansa. Eventually, a commercial vessel offered to assist and intercepted the Lansa, McCool said.

McAfee remained in contact with Lind and communicated with the Coast Guard six times. Lind was eventually able to replace the anchor locking plug that had become dislodged and continue his voyage, McCool said.

"It looks like a happy ending," McCool said.

The incident still gives McAfee a thrill.

"The main thing we do is help people in distress," he said. "That's what we're here for, to serve them."

In a world of cellular telephones and the Internet, ham radio operators may appear to some like technological dinosaurs stuck in time. But even during and following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, ham radio operators monitored the various frequencies listening for unusual traffic and relaying messages, McAfee said.

And the retiree from the Elf Atochem -- now called Atofina -- plant in Axis showed that he is never alone. He sat in front of his radio, pushed the lever on his microphone and told his fellow listeners that he was performing a demonstration and asked for anyone to call back.

Dave from Oklahoma, who began his hobby in the 1960s, spoke up. As did Bill from North Carolina. There was another Dave from Austin, Texas, and Al from Crossville, Tenn., and Phil from Las Vegas, jokingly referred to as Lost Wages.

To even get on the air, they all had to pass a test administered by the Federal Communications Commission. They then receive a "call" that's a combination of numbers and letters. Everyone has to learn "standard phonetics," the language of amateur radio, and Morse code, an international code that is a series of dots and dashes used for transmitting messages.

McAfee mostly monitors the Maritime Mobile Service Network and the Intercontinental Amateur Traffic Net, which are on separate frequencies. And covering nearly every inch of one wall are various cards representing different stations from around the world with whom McAfee has communicated: Belgium, Great Britain, Slovakia, Germany, as well as cards from all over the United States.

Outside, a 100-foot antenna and an aluminum ladder that serves as a backup antenna help bring the outside world to one corner of Eight Mile.

"You meet the most interesting people," said McAfee. "You never know who's an amateur operator."

Dear "Army Mom,"

Dec 18, 2003

Dear "Army Mom,"

Just wanted to take a second to tell you what happened in Iraq today. It was raining - and I was just coming in to my headquarters when when I passed by one of my newer soldiers - an immigrant from the former Soviet Union - and one of my BEST privates.

I was stopped in my tracks, for behold - on such a dreary day he was smiling. I was being funny (at first) and I said "awww you got a package with some goodies? Who sent that to you?" And as I expected to hear him say "my mom (or something like that)" he turned his face to me and said "I don't know...." he had a smile on his face.....and as I saw his eyes glazing he said " ...that's why I was smiling" and at that my eyes began to glaze too.

I can never take for granted their service, not for one minute - not for one second. And now...even in a hell hole like this - God has sent yet another Angel.

I'll bet you didn't know that did you? How truly amazing - how close we come to God in such a far away place.

And how silly I am for thinking that this private's safety is for me only to keep. Seems there are many who share this burden-and make me sleep sound.

You made one of my soldiers smile today - sitting there by himself - and for that, you have touched my soul.

I'd thank you, but that's not why Angels do what they do (I know). So instead I'll just say - Well Done! You can rest easy, message received. And I'll do my best to bring them home. I owe God one ;-)

Thank you from my soul,

PS From the Fourth Army son of a mom like you no doubt.Iraq War News
